Macrame Hanging Shelves Tutorial

Published on 21 August 2025 at 12:39

As I've grown more confident in my macrame knots and simple projects, it was time to branch out. I wanted to create something more challenging—a piece that was not only beautiful but also functional. I was brainstorming for macrame items that weren't just for decoration but could be used every day. After all, a piece that serves a purpose feels more worth the investment.

So, without further ado, I'm thrilled to introduce a project that perfectly combines form and function: the macrame shelf. This piece adds a touch of handcrafted, boho-chic style to any space while providing a practical spot for your favorite small items.

For this project, I started with a tutorial that taught me the basics, but as you become more familiar with a craft, you'll feel confident enough to deviate from the instructions. That's exactly what I did with the shelves you see here. I took the foundational techniques and added my own unique style in the knots and design.

The best part is, you can do the same! Use this post as inspiration and as a stepping stone to create a macrame shelf that is uniquely yours.

What You'll Need to Get Started

  • Macrame cord: About 100 feet of 4-5mm single-strand cotton cord works well for a small shelf.

  • A wooden plank: A sanded wood plank, roughly 15-20 inches long and 5-6 inches wide, is a great starting point.

  • A wooden ring or dowel: This will be the top anchor for your shelf.

  • Scissors: A sharp pair is key for clean cuts.

  • Measuring tape or ruler: To ensure your cords are the right length.

My Take on the Macrame Shelf

As you can see from my finished pieces, I played with the design to create a different look. I focused on using a series of square knots to create a dense, sturdy pattern that would hold the shelf securely. I also experimented with the spacing of the knots to create a more open, airy feel in the lower sections.

This project was a fantastic way to practice my skills and push my creativity. I encourage you to do the same! What kind of knots or patterns would you incorporate into your own macrame shelf?

I've linked to the video tutorial that was my starting point for this project. It provides an excellent visual guide to the basic knots and structure. Remember, once you understand the core techniques, you can swap out knots, change the pattern, or adjust the length to match your own style.
