DIY Delight: The Mini Macrame Wreath Ornament (Beginner-Friendly!)

Published on 2 November 2025 at 14:44

Welcome to the first post in our festive series! If you're new to macrame or just looking for a super quick way to add a handmade, bohemian touch to your holiday decor, the Mini Macrame Wreath is the perfect place to start.

This ornament requires only one basic knot—the Lark's Head Knot—making it easy enough to finish in under 15 minutes!

What You'll Need

This project is minimal on supplies but big on charm!

  • Macrame Cord - 3mm or 4mm single-strand cotton cord (Natural, White, or Green) The thicker the cord, the fuller the wreath!
  • Wooden Ring - 2-inch or 3-inch diameter. The foundation of your wreath.
  • Cord Pieces - 10-12 pieces, 8-10 inches each. Exact number depends on your cord thickness—you want the ring covered.
  • Hanging Cord - 1 piece of twine or thin string, 6 inches. For creating the loop to hang it on the tree.
  • Tools - Sharp scissors, measuring tape

Learning the Knot: The Lark's Head Knot

The entire ornament is built using this single, simple knot. This knot securely attaches your working cord to the ring.

  1. Fold: Take one of your 8-10 inch cords and fold it exactly in half, creating a loop at the top.

  2. Loop Over: Place the loop over the wooden ring.

  3. Pull Through: Bring the loop behind the wooden ring.

  4. Finish: Pull the two cut ends of the cord through the loop you just brought behind the ring.

  5. Tighten: Pull both ends firmly to cinch the knot snug against the ring. The resulting knot should look neat and flat on the edge of the ring.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Cut and Prep Your Cords

Measure and cut all 10-12 of your cords to your preferred length (8-10 inches). A longer length will result in a more generous fringe.

2. Attach to the Ring

Using the Lark's Head Knot (described above), begin attaching your cords to the wooden ring.

  • Start at the top of the ring.

  • Work your way around, placing each knot snugly right next to the previous one.

  • Continue until the entire wooden ring is covered. The goal is to completely conceal the wood beneath the knots.

3. Trim the Festive Fringe

  1. Lay the wreath flat on your workspace.

  2. Using your scissors, trim the hanging cords into a beautiful, even arc or half-circle shape. Take your time to get the shape symmetrical.

  3. (Optional but recommended!) Use a small comb or your fingers to gently brush out the cord ends. This will separate the strands and create a fluffy, soft fringe.

4. Add the Hanger

  1. Take your 6-inch piece of thin string or twine.

  2. Tie it to the top of your wreath (right between two of your Lark's Head Knots) using a simple overhand knot, creating a small loop for hanging. Trim the excess knot tails.

Finished!

Hang your beautiful new Mini Macrame Wreath on your tree, use it as a gift topper, or tie a few to a garland! It's a quick win that adds instant handmade charm.
